Royan Institute To Establish Therapeutic, Research Complex

Tehran, Sept 9, IRNA - The ground-breaking ceremony of a therapeutic, research and educational complex affiliated to Royan Institute was held in Tehran on September 7. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Hamid Gourabi, head of the Royan Institute and the Mayor of Tehran, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf. Royan Institute, Tehran Municipality and Endowment and Charity Affairs Organization in Tehran are establishing the center, wrote Tuesday's edition of the English-language paper 'Iran Daily'. The complex will be built in an area of 15,000 square meters and has two sections: a 324-bed 13-story hospital and a research center. The hospital will have six wards offering infertility treatments, cell therapy and bone marrow transplant and the principles of the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) will be applied at the hospital. The research center will focus on cell engineering, stem cells and infertility treatments. Gourabi was hopeful that the complex will be constructed in three years. He added that Iran ranked tenth in stem cell therapy and Iranian researchers have launched clinical trials on cell therapy. GMP guidelines focus on maintaining quality and safety standards across a range of industries, including medical and food manufacturing. They also seek to make sure products such as drugs or vaccines have consistent strength, purity and quality. In fact, GMP guidelines cover quality and safety standards in all aspects of the manufacturing process—from buildings, equipment and staff training, to raw materials, operational processes and quality control systems. Current GMP guidelines and regulations are based on quality principles that pharmaceutical and healthcare manufacturers have observed for over 50 years. Dedicated GMP-approved facilities have to be set up to handle production of new cell-based therapies.
