Russia allocates $20 mln to fight Ebola virus disease, vaccine is being developed

NAYPYIDAW, November 13. /TASS/. Russia has earmarked around $20 million to combat the deadly Ebola virus disease, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at the meeting of the East Asia Summit on Thursday. “Top priority measures today should be taken to fight the fever, caused by the Ebola virus. Russia is allocating around $20 million to these aims,” Medvedev said. Russia has sent “specialists, medicines and expendable materials” to the affected areas. “We are developing drugs to prevent and treat this disease,” the Russian prime minister said. The death toll from the Ebola virus has reached 5,160, according to the World Health Organization. Most people died in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra-Leone. Over 14,000 people have been infected. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia will continue helping the international community to fight the deadly Ebola outbreak and will make every effort to protect its nationals from the virus. The Ebola virus disease, previously known as the Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe illness, often fatal, according to the WHO. The virus is passed on to people from wild animals and can be transmitted from humans to humans. The average EVD case death rate is some 50 percent. Read more
