Russian Ministry of Science and Education to set up space research center in Uganda

MOSCOW, August 1. /TASS/. The Russian Ministry of Education and Science and Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics have developed a concept of establishing a space research and monitoring center in Uganda, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday. "The Russian Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with the Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics, has completed work on a concept of establishing an engineering and information center for space research and monitoring, which also includes the launch of the first joint microsatellite UgandaSat-1," the statement reads. Documents concerning the implementation of the project are expected to be signed at the Russia-Africa summit that will take place in Sochi on October 24. A space research center will be created under the "Scientific and Educational Initiative for Uganda and East African Countries" that the Russian Ministry of Education and Science launched earlier in the year. The initiative’s goal is to facilitate Uganda’s development through Russian innovations and educational programs aimed at increasing economic efficiency. The initiative covers four areas, including agriculture, the natural resources sector, the energy sector (particularly, nuclear energy) and environment protection. The experience gained in Uganda is planned to be used in other countries in the future. Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi will host the first Russia-Africa Summit on October 24. The leaders of more than 50 countries of the region have been invited, 35 of whom have confirmed their participation. Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russian and Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt, which is presiding over the African Union in 2019, will co-chair the summit. Read more
