Russian watchdog agency says no need for restricting trips to South Korea yet

NOVO-OGARYOVO, June 17. /TASS/. There is no need for restricting the Russian citizens' trips to South Korea at present in the wake of an outbreak the MERS coronavirus in that country, Anna Popova, the director of the Russian consumer rights and sanitation watchdog agency Rospotrebnadzor told reporters on Wednesday. "We're taking all the necessary steps today in cooperation with other agencies, federal and regional likewise, and municipalities and airlines are tightly involved in these efforts, too," she said. "That's why any travel restrictions are off the agenda today because there are no grounds for this," Popova said. "The number of viruses on our planet is so huge that it's simply economically irrational to vaccinate people after an outbreak of each virus," she said, adding that only 1,300 or so cases of MERS in humans had been registered since 2012. "Prior to 2012, this coronavirus affected animals only," Popova said, adding that it changed somewhat later. "The issue of producing a vaccine against it can be considered today, of course, but no global steps against the coronavirus are envisioned," she said. Read more
