Traditional medicine Iran's cultural heritage

Tehran, Jan 11, IRNA – Head of the Department of Traditional Medicine and Islamic Medicine of the Academy of Medical Sciences Ali-Akbar Velayati said Sunday that traditional medicine has to be preserved as Iran's cultural heritage. Traditional medicine Iran's cultural heritage Velayati appreciated recent efforts made by the Ministry of Health to revive traditional medicine, underlining the need for systematizing the field. Establishment of faculties of traditional medicine in Iran has allowed those graduated in general medicine and familiar with modern medicine to enter this major, Velayati said. Traditional medicine is receiving growing approval all around the world, Velayati said, citing what he called 'democratizing medicine' in the US due to inclination of American people towards traditional medicine. He said that democratizing medicine means that people are free to choose between different methods of medical treatments – either the modern ones or the traditional ones. Velayati hailed the publication of several books on traditional medicine, particularly the encyclopedia of traditional medicine, by the Academy of Medical Sciences as a positive step to revive the field.
