Vietnam: Hanoi, Lao Cai ready to tackle Ebola virus

Hanoi, October 24 (VNA) - The health sector of Vietnam's capital city of Hanoi and relevant authorities have implemented a number of Ebola response measures, from preparing healthcare facilities and equipment to training personnel and organising drills. The municipal Preventive Health Centre has worked with Hanoi’s Centre for International Health Quarantine to increase inspections at Noi Bai airport to process individuals travelling to Hanoi from Ebola-affected areas more quickly. So far, no cases of Ebola have been detected amongst those travelling to Vietnam from areas affected by the virus, which is becoming increasingly serious and complex in West African countries. The city’s health sector prepared 80 pieces of chemical spraying equipment, 14 tonnes of antiseptic chemicals, a large supply of face masks and protective clothing, and equipment for taking and transporting samples. In addition, communication efforts were increased to raise the public’s awareness of the deadly virus and preventive measures. At a recent meeting to review Vietnam’s response to Ebola, Vice Director of Hanoi’s Health Department Hoang Duc Hanh called upon relevant authorities to continue the supervision of individuals entering Vietnam from Ebola-affected areas. He also highlighted the need to run more communication campaigns and training courses, and prepare healthcare facilities for the worst-case scenario. At the same time, health authorities in the northern mountainous province Lao Cai carried out similar measures against the Ebola virus. According to Bui Thi Loc, Director of the provincial Centre for International Health Quarantine, the centre is cooperating with border guards, local customs authorities and travel agencies operating in the locality to supervise tourists travelling from Ebola-affected areas to Vietnam.-VNA
