First heart surgeries performed in Shymkent

Shymkent, May 29, 2009 (Khabar) - The Shymkent Cardiological Centre has begun performing open-heart surgeries. Sultanbek Myrzaliyev was hospitalized twice with a heart attack. Being afraid of the third heart attack, he took the decision to undergo a heart operation in Astana. Several days ago, Shymkent cardiac surgeons told the patient some good news.

Sultanbek Myrzaliyev, patient:
- They said I don’t have to go to Astana. A surgery can be performed here. I know all these doctors very well so I don’t have to worry about it.

Now, he and two other patients have already undergone surgeries and they are felling well. Coronary artery bypass surgeries are considered to be among the most difficult ones. First of all, doctors need to test the patient’s arteries to detect damaged sites. Then, at the operating theatre, the patient’s heart is stopped and blocked arteries are replaced with new ones. Such a surgery normally lasts from 3 to 6 hours.

Saule Abseitova, head doctor, South Kazakhstan Cardiological Centre:
- It is a cost-consuming and traumatic operation. But it is a necessary surgery for those patients who might have a risk of dying from a heart attack. Such patients require a coronary artery bypass surgery which can provide another 10 or 12 years of normal life again.

This surgery is free of charge but the cost of the operation is over one million tenge which are paid by the government. This year’s budget has the money for 100 surgeries while there are 300 potential patients in the region today. The regional administration is ready to fiancé another 100 surgeries. Doctors are sure of their skills as they had practice in the world’s leading clinics. South Kazakhstan surgeons also plan to start performing children’s heart operations.
