No radioactive substances detected in imported Japanese food

BANGKOK, December 7 (TN A) - Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Wednesday that no food products imported from Japan have been found to have been contaminated with radioactive substances so far. Thai FDA Secretary-General Dr. Pipat Yingseree insisted that his agency, under the Ministry of Public Health, has regularly monitored and inspected food products imported from Japan for possible radioactive contamination, particularly those produced in nine Japanese prefectures affected by radiation leaks in Japan's Northeast in March this year and has not detected any of them. The Thai FDA chief's remarks followed recent reports that up to 30.8 becquerels of caesium, a radioactive substance, per kilogram was detected in Meiji powdered milk, sold in Japan, prompting the Japanese producer to have recalled 400,000 cans of Meiji powdered milk from the market. The FDA chief acknowledged that Thailand has mostly imported dairy products, including powdered milk, from Australia and New Zealand. (TNA)
