APMG 2018 To Gather Non-Elite Athletes In A Multi Event Games

KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 (Bernama) – The first edition of the Asia Pacific Masters Games 2018 (APMG 2018) which will be held in Penang from Sept 7 to 15 would gather non-elite athletes to compete in multi-sporting events. “It is not all about the elite athletes, it is just about the participation and it is open to all Malaysians young and old including the disabled,” said APMG 2018 honourary ambassador Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar in a press conference after launching the Games Torch Run at the Kuala Lumpur Tourism Bureau, here Friday. “It is going to be a great festival as we can see multicultural sports and the mix of sports from pencak silat to the lion dance. We already have a contestant of mixed culture,” he added. APMG is a multi-sport event open to individuals based on the concept of free sports without representing any country or state. Participants only needed to fulfil the minimum age of 30 and above and athletes compete in their own age group and category - competitive, recreational or social. There will be 21 sporting events in competition, among them football, badminton, athletics, swimming, archery, table tennis, squash and tennis. The AMPG 2018 Torch Run starts on April 28 in Kudat, Sabah and would travel through all the states in the Peninsula before arriving at the Esplanade, Penang for the official launching ceremony of the Games. The Torch Run, which was organised by the Malaysian Association of Local Authorities (MALA), will cover a distance of 3,908 kilometres (km) over 99 days. -- BERNAMA
