Archer Muhamad Zarif Contributes Third Medal In YOG 2014

From AHMAD MULIADY ABDUL MAJID NANJING, Aug 25 (Bernama) -- National back up squad archer Muhamad Zarif Syahiir Zolkifli contributed Malaysia's third medal, a silver, in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) held here, through the mixed pairs Recurve event at the Fangshan Archery range. Muhamad Zarif who partnered Germany's Freywald Cynthia lost 0-6 to eventual gold medal winners Luis Gabriel (PHI)/Li Jiaman (CHI) while Canada's Peters Eric/Tuokkola Mirjam from Finland beat Martens Rick (BEL)/Romero Regina (GUA) 6-2 to win the bronze. Malaysia had earlier won a gold and silver medal through badminton and diving, namely shuttler Cheam June Wei (mixed doubles) and diver Loh Zhiayi, women's 10m platform individual, Saturday. Though the Olympic Council of Malaysia and the National Sports Council did not set any specific medal target for the YOG 2014, Malaysian contingent's chef-de-mission Wong Pei Tty who had predicted three medals from Nanjing, feels there was more to come since Malaysian athletes would be participating in a number of events. Even Muhamad Zarif, 16, will be taking part in the men's individual Recurve Monday. "Initially I did not expect a medal, let alone entering the final but my most tense moments were in the semifinals," he told Bernama, here Sunday. -- BERNAMA
