China Continue To Dominate Action In YOG 2014

From AHMAD MULIADY ABDUL MAJID NANJING, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Host China continued its dominance on the third day of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) but Russia and Hungary kept pace by remaining close in second and third place respectively. China has five gold, one silver, five bronze medals against Russia's tally of 4,3,3 while Hungary despite not winning any medals Tuesday remained in third spot with four gold and two bronze medals. Taiwan were a surprise package Tuesday when it moved into fourth spot with three gold, one silver and a bronze. Asean representative Thailand with two gold medals and a silver dropped from sixth to eighth position but Malaysia remained outside the medal tally list after failing to win any medals after three days of competition. Hopes however, medal hopes remain high as shuttlers have a good chance of moving into the semifinals in the individual and mixed doubles competitions. At the badminton arena, National junior singles shuttler Cheam June Wei moved into the quarterfinals after winning his third Group C match against Turkey's Muhammed Ali Kurt, 21-14, 21-6. June Wei also made it to the mixed doubles quarterfinals after partnering with Hong Kong's Tsz Yau Ng to beat Lim Guipu (China)/Kim Gaeun (South Korea) 22-20, 21-19. National junior women shuttler Lee Ying Ying who lost in the women's singles made amends by moving into the mixed doubles quarterfinals when she and her partner Chia Hung Lu from Taiwan beat Garrido Esquvellr (Mexico)/Kuuba Kristin (Estonia), 21-17, 21-18. Swimmers once again emerged from the pool empty handed when Yap Siew Hui could only manage seventh spot in the women's 50m Butterfly with a time of 28.50s at the Nanjing Natatorium Olympic Centre. Another swimmer, Lim Ching Hwang who saw action in the men's 50m freestyle ended up in eighth spot with a time of 24.26s while Angela Cheng Chui Pei who competed in the women's 800m Freestyle 9:00.61s. Wednesday, Malaysian athletes will see action in badminton, golf, sailing, teakwondo and athletics. -- BERNAMA
