Five Doubles Pairs Make It To Second Round Of Australia Open Super Series

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 (Bernama) -- Tan Boon Heong/Hoon Thien How led four Malaysian men's doubles pairs into the second round of the Australia Open Super Series at the Sydney State Sports Centre, Australia, Wednesday. Thien How-Boon Heong beat Australia's Raymond Tam/Glenn Warfe 21-15, 21-15 while Lim Khim Wah/Ow Yao Han disposed Philip Joper Escueta/Ronel Estanislao from the Philippines 21-19, 21-15. On Thursday, both the Malaysian pairs will play against each other for a place in the third round. Another Malaysian pair, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong beat Peter Gabriel Magnaye/Paul Jefferson Vivas from the Philippines 21-12, 21-9 to set up a date with Indonesian pair Gideon Markus Fernaldi/Markis Kido while Chan Kwon Beng/Chiang Jiann Shiarng who received a bye today face Xiaolong Liu/Zihan Qui from China in the next round. One mixed doubles pair also made it to the second round when Chan Peng Soon/Lai Pei Jing beat Kenta Kazuno/Yui Miyauchi from Japan, 21-17, 21-10. There was however, disappointment in the men's singles when Liew Darren lost to Takuma Ueda from Japan 21-9, 21-23, 15-21 after a three-set thriller and Jiann Shiarng lost 15-21, 21-15, 15-21 against Taiwan's Hsu Jen Hao. Zulfadli Zulkiffli was also shown the exit door after losing to Hong Kong's Wong Wing Ki 12-21, 17-21 while Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif suffered a similar fate against Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto, losing tamely 7-21, 8-21. The women's doubles pair of Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho also failed to advance after losing 7-21, 16-21 to Kugo Asumi/Yui Miyauchi of Japan. --BERNAMA
