Goh, Tan Spearhead Malaysia's Challenge To Quarterfinals Of Thailand Masters

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's top men's doubles pair, Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong led the country's charge to the last eight of the Princess Sirivannavari Thailand Masters Badminton Championships which is being held at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok. In Wednesday's action, Goh/Tan, the sixth seeds, advanced after edging hosts' pair Inkarat Apisuk/Sutichon Pol-Gul; winning in 21-11, 21-17 in their second round match, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfbadminton.org. Also making to the next round were former 2010 World Championships runners-up, Koo Kien Kiat/Tan Boon Heong who dislodged Choi Solgyu/Kim Jae Hwan of South Korea; 21-16, 21-15. Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei, on the other hand, received stiff resistance from the Indonesian pair of Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah/Rizki Amelia Pradipta before chalking up a 17-21, 21-14 and 21-19 win. World number 13th ranked mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying who are seeded seventh, also made it to the quarterfinals after whitewashing Rian Swastedian/Apriani Rahayu of Indonesia; winning in 21-10, 21-8. Malaysia's challenge in the men's singles event, however, fizzled out after the two players left standing in the tournament were shown the exit by their respective opponents. Former 2011 world junior champion, Zulfadli Zulkiffli lost in straight sets of 17-21, 14-21 to the second seed, Son Wan Ho of South Korea while former national shuttler, Tan Chung Seang went down 17-21, 21-18, 9-21 to another South Korean player, ninth seeded Jeon Hyeok Jin in the third round. Malaysia did not send any representative in the women's singles of the Grand Prix Gold tournament which offers US$120,000 (RM498,267) as prize money. -- BERNAMA
