Hockey Asia Cup: Malaysia Thrash Philippines 20-1 For Second Win

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia continued their fine run by whipping the Philippines 20-1 in their second Group A match of the 2019 Indoor Hockey Asia Cup in Chonburi, Thailand, Tuesday. The men's squad, coached by Megat Azrafiq Megat Termizi, led 9-0 at half-time. Faridzul Afiq Mohd and Shafiq Yaacob scored four goals each, Muhammad Firdaus Omar and Muhamad Azhar each scored a hattrick, and Aminudin Zain, Shello Silverius and Rafizul Mustafa contributed two each. Marvin Lianza scored the only consolation field goal for the Philippines in 31st minute. Malaysia, who thrashed Bangladesh 6-0 on Monday, will face defending champions Iran on Thursday and end their group fixture against hosts Thailand on Friday. Meanwhile, the women’s team will face Thailand on Wednesday followed by Taiwan on Thursday. Only the top two finishers in the group stage will advance to the semifinals of the biennial tournament, which also offers berths to the 2021 World Cup. -- BERNAMA
