Indonesia Tops Provisional Medal Tally On Saturday

Palembang, S Sumatra, Dec 22 (Antara) - Indonesia has climbed to the top of the provisional medal tally of the 17th ASEAN University Games (POM ASEAN), after winning medals in several sporting disciplines during the last two days. Until Friday, Thailand still led the provisional medal tally, according to data published by the POM ASEAN information center here on Saturday. In the meantime, out of the 11 participating nations, the contingent of Brunei Darussalam is yet to secure medals in any of the 20 contested sporting disciplines. Until Saturday, the host nation Indonesia had grabbed 57 gold, 68 silver, and 43 bronze medals, while Thailand stood at the second position, with 50 gold, 31 silver, and 20 bronze medals. In addition, Malaysia has pocketed 32 gold, 35 silver, and 46 bronze medals. "The participating athletes contested in a total of 20 sporting disciplines: football, sepak takraw, volleyball, wushu, taekwondo, karate, chess, tennis, archery, table tennis, beach volleyball, badminton, futsal, athletics, swimming, fencing, martial arts, diving, basketball, and pentaque," Asdit Abdullah, a spokesman for POM ASEAN, earlier remarked here. The POM ASEAN, which was inaugurated by Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday night (December 10) in the South Sumatra provincial city of Palembang, will go on until December 21.
