Iskandar Leads Malaysia's Challenge In China Masters Third Round

KUALA LUMPUR, April 21 (Bernama) -- Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin led the national badminton squad into the third round of the China Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament at the Olympic Centre in Changzho, China Wednesday. He overpowered Zhu Siyuan of China 21-19 and 21-19 in the second round while another national singles player Liew Darren also advanced after defeating another Chinese player, Ye Binghong in rubber sets, 21-18, 16-21, 21-15. Iskandar Zulkarnain will meet the tournament's eighth seed, Lee Dong Keun of South Korea while Darren will be up against seventh seed, H.S Prannoy of India. Also progressing into the next round were national the men's doubles pair of Hoon Thien How/Teo Kok Siang who took only 33 minutes to dispose off Taiwanese pair, Shang Kai Lin/Lu Ching Yao in 21-19, 21-15. National women's top pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei easily tamed Guo Xuyi/Liu Huijie in 21-12 and 21-9 in 25 minutes and were joined by two national mixed doubles pairs in the third round. Tan Kian Meng/Lai Pei Jing defeated Riky Widianto/Puspita Richi Dili of Indonesia in 15-21, 21-18, 21-11 while the top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying downed Kenta Kazuno/Ayane Kurihara of Japan in straight sets, 21-18, 23-21. -- BERNAMA
