Malaysia to Host Eurasia Cup Golf Tournament in 2016

SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), March 29 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak confirmed that Malaysia will host the EurAsia Cup golf tournament in 2016. This came as Team Asia managed to provide a very exciting finish by scoring a draw with Team Europe during the final round of the tournament on Saturday. "When I discovered that Team Asia was trailing by 5-0 on the first day, I thought it would be an uphill task for Team Asia to recover from that as so much was lost on the first day...but credit to Team Asia as they managed to recover on the second day and today, they provided a very exciting finish. "Since this is so exciting and inconclusive (matchpoint), let me say on behalf of the government and PGM (Professional Golf of Malaysia), I confirm to you that we will host this event in two years' time and four years' time," he said at the prize-giving ceremony held at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club here. Najib is also confident that the EurAsia Cup golf tournament would inspire many people to participate in this game, and for the game to continue to grow in Asia. The three-day inaugural event, sanctioned by The European Tour and Asian Tour and presented by DRB-HICOM, pit 10 of the finest golfers from Europe against a 10-man team from Asia. PGM is the local coordinator of the highly-anticipated inaugural event to coincide with Visit Malaysia Year 2014. On Thursday, Najib, before hitting his ceremonial tee-shot to mark the start of the first round of the event, observed a minute's silence with the team captains of the EurAsia Cup and dignitaries, as a mark of respect for the 239 passengers and crew on board the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH370, which was believed to have ended in the southern India Ocean. -- BERNAMA
