Malaysia Targets 30 Gold Medals At AUG In Singapore

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), June 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is targeting 30 gold medals at the 18th ASEAN University Games (AUG) in Singapore starting July 8. Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh said a total of 213 athletes will carry Malaysia's challenge in 13 of the 16 sports contested. "Our target is not as high as before since we are only vying for only 150 medals from 13 sports. "The absence of proven athletes who are training for Rio Olympics and Malaysia Games (Sukma) is also a factor," he told reporters after handing over Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag) to Malaysian chef de mission, Assoc Prof Dr Asri Selamat at a ceremony here, Thursday. At AUG 2014 in Palembang, Indonesia, the Malaysian contingent finished third behind Indonesia and Thailand, winning 40 gold medals, 42 silver and 49 bronze. --BERNAMA
