Malaysian Intellectually Disabled Olympic Contigent Confident Of Doing Better In Los Angeles

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's intellectually disabled contingent to the 2015 Special Olympic World Games in Los Angeles is confident of doing better than the country's performance four years ago in Athens, despite sending new faces. In the 2011 Special Olympics in Athens, the Malaysian contingent returned home proudly with 23 medals including six gold medals. Special Olympics Kuala Lumpur acting deputy president Nur Azida Daud said following the rules set by the Olympic committee, those who had won gold in the last Games were not allowed to compete. "As such, Malaysia has to bring new athletes who will be competing for the first time in the meet. It also gives them exposure," she told reporters after attending a celebration held for the contingent by Herbalife Malaysia. Herbalife Global will be supplying nutritional needs for the 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 177 countries who will be taking part in the Los Angeles 2015 Special Olympics World Games. Nur Azida said Malaysia is sending 25 athletes who will be taking part in swimming, track and field, bowling, equestrian, football, golf and kayaking in the Games to be held from July 25 till Aug 2. Nur Azida said they have worked with Education Ministry and the Welfare Department in identifying new talents. "Preparation for our athletes was conducted for a year. Every weekend they will have their activities monitored by the coaches," she said. --BERNAMA
