Nicol And Wee Wern Overcome First Hurdle At US Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- Nicol David and Low Wee Wern breezed into the second round of the United States Open at Daskalakis Athletic Centre, Drexel University in Philadelphia. World number one Nicol, who is gunning for her third consecutive US Open title, only took 32 minutes to dispatched off Samantha Teran of Mexico, 11-6, 11-5 and 11-4 victory in a match played at ASB Glass Court late Saturday. "It's never easy playing against a training partner and friend (Samantha). I won 3-0 against Samantha and will be facing Rachael Grinham on Monday," said Nicol in her Facebook page. For the record, squash queen Nicol won the US Open in 2012 and 2013. Meawnhile, sixth seed Wee Wern was stretched to four set before emerging victorious with a 11-5, 14-12, 7-11 and 11-6 win over Joey Chan of Hong Kong in the match played at Drexel Kline and Specter Courts. "Joey played really well today (Sunday). After losing the third, I really needed to hold her back and get into the fourth game because you can’t give Joey anything. "So mentally, it was really hard to get back in the match again after being 2-0 up," said Malaysian number two Wee Wern in the tournament website www.usopensquash.com. Australian Rachael got through to the second round by defeating world junior champion, Egyptian Habiba Mohamed; 11-3, 11-9, 3-11 and 11-7. Wee Wern's opponent in the second round, Nicolette Fernandes of Guyana outplayed Aisling Blake of Ireland; 11-5, 12-10 and 11-5 in another first round encounter. -- BERNAMA
