OCM To Announce Rio Olympic Games Flag Bearer On Thursday

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) are expected to announce the Malaysian contingent's flag bearer for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil, on Thursday. OCM President Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said the OCM board members would be meeting soon to discuss and decide the best candidate as flag bearer for the world's prestigious sports event. Two-time Olympics silver medalist, Lee Chong Wei is tipped to be the most likely choice for the task. Previously at the London Olympic Games in 2012, national diver Pandelela Rinong was selected as the flag bearer. "We've yet to decide who will be the flag bearer. I think everyone can predict who the athlete is. We will have a board meeting this Thursday and the candidate for flag bearer will be one of the agenda (at the meeting). "Most of the athletes are training overseas, so we will announce it as soon as possible," Tunku Imran told reporters. Twenty-two athletes have qualified on merit for the Games namely Khairul Anuar Mohamad (archery); Mohd Azizulhasni Awang, Fatehah Mustapa (cycling); Ooi Tze Liang, Cheong Jun Hoong, Nur Dhabitah Sabri, Pandelela Rinong, Ng Yan Yee (diving); Khairulnizam Mohd Affendy, Nur Shazrin Latiff (sailing); Johnathan Wong Guanjie (shooting); Welson Sim (swimming); Nauraj Singh (athletics) and Mohd Hafifi Mansor (weightlifting). The others are Lee Chong Wei, Goh V Shem, Tan Wee Kiong, Chan Peng Soon, Goh Liu Ying, Tee Jing Yi, Vivian Hoo and Woon Khe Wei in badminton. The Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games is scheduled from Aug 5-21. --BERNAMA
