OCM Pick Three Sports As Medal Prospects For M'sian Contingent At Rio Olympics Games

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) has identified badminton, cycling and diving as medal prospects for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics held from Aug 5 to 21. OCM President Tunku Imran Tuanku Ja'afar said the OCM has however, not ruled out sailing as another prospect based on the current performances of sailors in the elite national squad. "We do not want to place a specific (medal) target for the sports associations to ensure athletes under their jurisdiction can prepare well for the Games," said Tunku Imran after receiving sponsorship pledges for the Rio-bound Malaysian contingent from three companies, at Wisma OCM here Thursday. Bata Malaysia Sdn Bhd will sponsor a pair of leather shoes and Power brand sports shoes for each athlete and official. Entogenex Industries Sdn Bhd will provide an anti-dengue lotion while Pax Flora Sdn Bhd will give a set of body care kit, comprising an anti-mosquito soap, roll-on, body balm and body mist spray. Malaysia's Chief-de-Mission to the Rio Olympics, Mohamed Al-Amin Abd Majid who was also present assured athletes and officials heading to Rio that the OCM and the National Sports Council will take precautionary measures in view of the Zika outbreak in Brazil and about 60 other countries. He also reminded the Malaysian contingent, especially the athletes, to not go out of the Games Village to avoid any untoward incidents. "I was made to understood that the Rio Olympics Games organiser will provide mosquitoes repellant and net inside the Games Village but we must also take our own initiative to ensure the welfare of our athletes and officials," said Mohamed Al-Amin who is also the Badminton Association of Malaysia acting president. International media reports stated that Australian Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch and a physiotherapist Sarah Ross were robbed by two men, one armed with a gun, at a park near their hotel at the Flamengo Beach in Rio, last Sunday. -- BERNAMA
