Only Kien Keat/Boon Heong Survive To Go Into Australian Open Quarter-Finals

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Former All England champions Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong were the only Malaysians left standing in the Australian Open in Sydney, Australia. The former national pair who resumed their partnership after turning professional since leaving the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), booked their quarter-final berth after outclassing third seeds, Lee Sheng Mu/Tsai Chia Hsin of Taiwan. The Malaysian pair who combined well took 32 minutes to beat the world number four pair in 21-16 and 21-18 to book a battle against China's Liu Xiaolong/Qiu Zihan. The Chinese duo defeated another Taiwan pair, Cheng Hung Ling/Wang Chi-Lin in 21-13 and 21-12 in the other men's doubles match. Unfortunately, it was the end of the road for top Malaysian pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong after they failed to overcome Japan's Hiroyuki Endo/Kenichi Hayakawa. The world-ranked 19th pair lost to the Japanese, 19-21, 21-16 and 21-16 in the 57-minute battle. --BERNAMA
