Silk Way motor rally to link Moscow with Beijing next year

MOSCOW, August 28. /TASS/. The Silk Way motor rally will kick off in summer next year in Moscow and finish in downtown Beijing, the organizers of the event have said. The motor rally will begin on the Red Square in early July 2016. Vladimir Chagin, Russia’s seven-time winner of the Dakar truck race, will become the director of the race. "The overall route will cover around 10,000 kilometers [6,200 miles]. More than half of them are special areas. The rally will see participants race across fantastic landscapes of the ancient Silk Way countries," the press service has said. The marathon will become a symbol of Russia’s strategic partnership with China, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller has stressed. "Our cooperation with the People’s Republic of China in the gas sphere is developing rapidly. The Silk Way rally-marathon that will link the capitals of our countries is due to become a bright symbol of our strategic cooperation," he said. The director general of Russia’s KAMAZ truck manufacturer, Sergey Kogotin, said the Silk Way has become a generally recognized world sports brand. "I’m glad that the 2016 route will link Russia and China," he said. This once again confirms the traditional friendly ties between the two countries and will become another impetus for strengthening the strategic cooperation and partnership, and not only in sport, Kogotin said. "And for the participants of the rally, the renewed Silk Way will give a great opportunity to show their professional skills and the latest achievements in the global automobile industry," he said. The Silk Way event has been held since 2009. The route of the event is changed every year. In general, the race is held on the territory of Russia, as well as in the Central Asian republics of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Read more
