Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Reviews 2022 World Cup Plans

Doha, April 21 (QNA) - Plans for the 2022 Qatar World Cup are being reviewed and the final number of host stadia will be submitted to FIFA's executive committee for approval, Qatar's Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SCDL) said Monday. "As is the case with any FIFA World Cup, once a country is chosen as host, a review of the bid plans is made with the organizers to propose the final host cities and stadia projects, which then need to be approved by the FIFA Executive Committee," the committee said in a statement. "This is the same process that all FIFA World Cup host nations undergo. For Qatar, the process of selecting the final proposed line-up of host venues is ongoing. In due course, the final proposal for stadia will be submitted to the FIFA Executive Committee for approval. The requirement is a minimum of eight and a maximum of 12 stadia." Construction work of five stadia will start within a month and 92 training grounds will be built ahead of the tournament, Ghanim Ali Al Kuwari, SCDL director of sports projects, said today in a press statement. Al Kuwari added that preliminary work has started at Al Wakra stadium, one of eight main air-conditioned stadia to be built all over Qatar. He noted that SCDL oversees the construction of five host grounds and Qatar Foundation supervises another three. The Qatari official said a venue to house FIFA operations during the tournament has already been selected and work was launched for fan zones and the media center. The first fan zone is set to open next June in Katara with further ones to be added later, Al Kuwari said. (QNA)
