Two Badminton Gold Complete National Contingent's Target

GOLD COAST, April 16 (Bernama) — The Malaysian contingent have completed their Commonwealth Games campaign in the 12th position with seven gold, five silver and 12 bronze medals. Despite failing to be in the top 10 group, the national contingent succeeded in surpassing their achievement in Glasgow, Scotland in which Malaysia won six gold medals. Badminton was the savior when it contributed two gold medals in the men’s singles and women’s doubles. Praises should be given to Lee Chong Wei who defeated his much younger opponent for the gold. In fact, the victory Sunday was sweet for the 35-year-old athlete who is making his last appearance in the Commonwealth Games. In the final Chong Wei subdued world number one player K.Srikanth of India 19-21, 21-14, 21-14. In the women’s doubles, Chow Mei Kuan-Vivian Hoo had only been formed as a pair in February after Woon Khe Wei was injured. In fact, it was a Commonwealth debut for Mei Kuan who combined well with Vivian to beat England’s Lauren Smith-Sarah Walker 21-12, 21-12 in the final. Badminton closed its campaign with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals below its three gold target set earlier. The silver medal was won in the mixed team while the bronze medals were won by men’s doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and mixed doubles Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying. — BERNAMA
