Fishing Village In Besut, Terengganu Produces World Champions

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia) May 31 (Bernama) -- A fishing village in Besut has produced world champions. Muhammad Syazwan Mat Sidek, 17, Muhammad Anuar Abd Ghani, 17, and Safiyyah Muhammad Nasir, 16, of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Besut in Terengganu have emerged the winner of the International Student Competition held in conjunction with the Third International Conference on Human Resource Development for Nuclear Power Programmes in Gyeongju, South Korea Wednesday. The team presented a project entitled “100 Things About Nuclear Science And Life” which raised awareness on the current or future impacts and applications of nuclear science and technology in their lives. Project coordinator, Wan Zul Azri Wan Mod Shatar said the team’s hard work paid off when it being shortlisted to the final stage. "We had to go through three phases in this competition where the first phase was participated by 188 teams of secondary school students from 30 countries,” he told Bernama in a message over WhatsApp Thursday. Wan Zul Azri said the team defeated teams from the United States, Hungary, Japan and host country South Korea in the final stage. Meanwhile, head of entourage Faizu Abd Rahman said the remarkable achievement was something that they extremely proud of because the students were able to compete with other students from developed countries. Prior to the competition, he said the students were exposed to various activities and participated in nuclear-related campaign with local communities in Pulau Perhentian. Terengganu Education director Shafruddin Ali Hussin said the team would return home from South Korea Friday. "They are expected to arrive at the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kelantan at 9 pm on Saturday before returning to Kuala Besut,” he said. -- BERNAMA
