India: Chennai Monorail Gets 'In Principle' Approval

NEW DELHI, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- India’s Ministry of Urban Development has given its 'in-principle' approval for Phase one of the monorail project in Tamil Nadu, The Hindu reported. Phase one of the project in the state’s capital, Chennai, would connect Poonamallee and Kathipara with a link from Porur to Vadapalani, covering 20.68 km, said the English daily recently. The report, quoting unnamed officials, said the link, a public-private partnership project estimated to cost Rs. 3,267 crore (about US$528 million), would be implemented under the design, build, finance, operate and transfer mode. Malaysia’s Scomi Engineering Bhd together with a local partner, Essel Infraprojects Ltd, are one of the bidders for the said project. --BERNAMA
