11 Heritage Buildings To Be Lit Up In Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Eleven heritage buildings in the Malaysia's federal capital Kuala Lumpur have been identified for the building lighting programme to offer a new attraction for the tourism industry here. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib said these included the National Mosque, Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur City Hall Tower 1, Railway Station and Istana Budaya (National Theatre). "Lights will be fixed on selected buildings which are considered unique and historical, this is one of the moves by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to promote Kuala Lumpur to tourists," he told reporters here Monday. He said City Hall was still discussing with the management of all the buildings concerned before the lights are fitted after the Aidilfitri celebrations. For this, he said, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) had also agreed to reduce the electricity tariff for these buildings during this period. He said that City Hall had also taken initiatives to promote the National Mosque as a tourist destination for tourists. "The National Mosque has the potential to be a heritage spot in Kuala Lumpur and it would increase the number of places for the tourists to visit when in the city," he said. Ahmad Phesal said that other efforts taken included upgrading the nearby parks to become part of the mosque compound so as to welcome tourists. The National Mosque has been recognised by the National Heritage Department under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture as a National Heritage Site in 2007. Earlier, Ahmad Phesal presented 200 robes to the Chief Imam of the National Mosque Syaikh Ismail Muhammad for tourists to wear when in the mosque. --BERNAMA
