Battle Of Kampar Sites To Be Developed As Perak Tourist Attractions

KAMPAR (Perak, Malaysia), Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Two historic sites here where the Battle of Kampar was fought during World War Two will soon be developed as Perak tourist attractions, said State Tourism, Arts, Culture, Multimedia and Communications Committee chairman Nolee Ashilin Mohammad Radzi. She said the 75-year-old sites located at Rabung Hijau, Gunung Bujang Melaka and Tanjung Bakung in Malim Nawar (a small town within the parliamentary constituency of Kampar in Malaysian Perak state) should be restored and preserved as national treasures. "This is because the historical sites will be able to attract more local and foreign tourists," she told reporters after launching the state's World War II Historical Site Conservation and Tour programme here. According to Nolee Ashilin, in terms of eco-tourism, the sites would also be able to generate a source of income for the local community. She said Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during his visit to the two sites last year had recommended to Prime Minister Najib Razak that the Malaysian government develop the 'Battle of Kampar' area. "Modi had requested that the Malaysian government constructed a monument in memory of the Indian soldiers who died there while serving the British during the war. "In fact, the villagers here have informed us that some war veterans and children of former British and Japanese soldiers who fought in the area often visited the military camps at Gunung Bujang Melaka. Meanwhile, Ministry of Tourism and Culture director for Perak, Mohd Hizaz Mohd Ibrahim said a walkway would be constructed for tourists visiting Gunung Bujang Melaka and the war memorial. In addition, both historical sites would be listed in the state tourism calendar in line with Visit Perak Year 2017, he said. Rabung Hijau (Green Ridge) at the foot of Gunung Bujang Melaka was built by British troops to protect themselves from Japanese attacks during the four-day Battle of Kampar from Dec 30, 1941 to Jan 2, 1942. Meanwhile, Tanjung Bakung is filled with interesting relics from the past including a chimney of an ammunition factory built by the Japanese. -- BERNAMA
