China launches direct flights from Moscow to Hainan to attract more Russian tourists

MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. China’s National Tourist Office plans a 70 percent increase in tourist flow to Hainan, a popular tropical island resort in the South China Sea, by launching direct flights from Moscow, the head of Rus Tour, a partner in the project, told TASS on Friday. "Investments in the project ‘Eastern Hawaii’ will stand at 3 billion roubles [more than $44 million]. Funds will be fully provided by the Chinese side interested in Russian tourist flow and we plan to attract 2,000 to 2,500 Russian holidaymakers per month," Vitaly Psel said. A direct 10-hour flight between Moscow and Hainan will be launched in early March, he said, adding that Hainan could become a substitute for Egyptian resorts, currently unavailable for Russians after the October 31 terrorist attack on a passenger jet returning to Russia. The minimum price of tour packages to Hainan has been cut to 35,000-40,000 roubles per person ($500-$600). Only 20,000 foreign tourists visited Hainan for the 2014-2015 season. Just five percent of these were Russians as the trip to the island took some 24 hours due to switching flights. Meanwhile, Russia's Association of Tour Operators said earlier on Friday that flights to Egypt could resume after the New Year and that some 100,000 Russian holidaymakers were expected bound for Red Sea resorts after the ban on flying there is lifted.
