Malaysian Capital KL Attractions Draw More Tourists During Eid Period

By Nur Hafizah Tan KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The festive season turned the capital city quieter but the fascinating tourist attractions around the city have certainly turned Kuala Lumpur alive. A Bernama survey found that tourist attraction areas in this capital city were still crowded with tourists from all over the world while most of the locals are still in their hometown due to Raya (Eid al-Fitr) leave. A ticket seller at Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia Wan Mohd Ridzuan said the number of visitors there was increasing compared to regular days. "Since we opened the museum yesterday (Tuesday), we have received almost 400 visitors, double the number of visitors during weekdays," he told Bernama Wednesday. Lorena Aguilera, 39, a tourist from Colombia who was visiting the museum, expressed her excitement at wonderful Islamic artwork and bulding structure at the museum. "I brought my two kids along and it was great for the kids to see and learn about Islamic art, architecture and culture under one roof and I find it is a perfect time to make a visit since the traffic is not heavy as usual," she said. The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur is the first and largest museum of its kind in South-East Asia, occupying 30,000 square metres, and housing more than 9,000 artefact. The museum is highly acclaimed as the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s Tourism Award for the best Tourist Attraction and named the top museum in Malaysia as well as the 10th in Asia by the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for museums around the globe. The museum was established in December 1998 as a response to the rapid growth of interest in Islamic art. Meanwhile, a tourist from Indonesia, Setio Anggoro, 37, who have arrived in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday said he visited the Islamic museum as it is renowned for its wonderful Islamic artwork. "This museum is a beautiful place and it is one of the best Islamic arts museum I have been to and as a Muslim I feel the display of replicas of famous mosques around the world is definitely mesmerizing, " he said. Besides the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, there are many fascinating attractions near that area such as the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, National Mosque, Orchid Park and Butterfly Park. -- BERNAMA
