MOT Mulls According International Status To Labuan Airport

LABUAN (Malaysia), Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Transport (MOT) will accord international status to Labuan Airport if there are international aviation players keen to turn Labuan as part of their preferred destination. Deputy Transport Minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the government had always given its support to the aviation industry and airport players to attract international flights. “If there is demand for international flight from foreign airlines to come to Labuan, the government will support it,” he told reporters after making a visit to Labuan Liberty Port here Thursday. Malaysian Malay Chamber of Commerce Labuan (DPMML) president Yussof Mohammad said the move would help boost the tourism industry. He said there needed to be continuous efforts to improve the air connectivity between Malaysia and neighboring countries. Yussof said it was imperative to focus on tourism to boost Labuan’s image as the preferred tourism destination. “To increase the frequency of flight into Labuan, be it domestic and international flights, we must also look at the infrastructure and attraction for visitors," he said, adding that they must be improved and attractive to bring in more arrivals. -- BERNAMA
