Organising World Class Events Can Put Labuan On Global Tourism Map - Labuan MP

LABUAN (Malaysia), July 10 (Bernama) -- Organising world class sporting events can help boost the image of Labuan, especially in the tourism sector, said Labuan Member of Parliament Rozman Isli. Rozman said major sporting events not only attract tourists but generates economic revenue in the hospitality and other related industries. "Organising international events like the 16th ‘Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) from Sept 17 to 22 is an opportunity to attract tourists and sports enthusiasts to Labuan," he told reporters after hosting 40 children with special needs and orphans through the "Shopping Raya" programme, here Wednesday. Through the Shopping Raya programme which was sponsored by the Labuan Puteri Umno division and Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territories Foundation), the children were allocated US$3,156 (RM10,000) for their shopping needs. Rozman said apart from USKU, Labuan would also host the 8th edition of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East-ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) in December. As the newly elected Labuan Sports Council chairman, Rozman also pledged to focus on upgrading infrastructure so that Labuan would be equipped to host major sporting events and other international events. Rozman said throughout last year US$694,335 (RM2.2 million) was allocated to improve sports facilities in the Island. -- BERNAMA
