Russian traveller’s rowboat on home straight to Australia

VLADIVOSTOK, May 18 (Itar-Tass) - The Turgoyak rowboat of a famous Russian traveller is nearing the endpoint of Australian Brisbane, where it is expected in nine or ten days after Fyodor Konyukhov’s five-month solo trip across the Pacific Ocean. Welcome headquarters have opened in the Australian city of Mooloolaba (Queensland) “Six people are working at the Mooloolaba headquarters at the moment, and we expect him [Konyukhov] in about nine or ten days. I cannot give a more exact date so far,” the chief of the headquarters, Konyukhov’s son Oskar Konyukhov, has told Tass. “Over the past few days weather conditions have been adverse - the boat got into a zone of strong winds, between 30 and 35 knots (one knot is 1.85 kilometers per hour), and the father could not row as it would be not just useless but even dangerous under such conditions,” he said “However, the wind has remained more or less favourable, which has helped him [the captain] cover about 60 miles (about 111 kilometers) over the past 24 hours. Now the weather is gradually improving. The father told me this morning that he can row again, and is trying to adjust the course,” Oskar said. “We hope that fair weather will persist in the coming few days,” he added. The rowboat started at the Chilean port of Concon on December 22, 2013, covering about 9,000 nautical miles (more than 16,600 kilometers). Turgoyak is to cover another 500 miles (926 kilometers) to reach the finish. The voyage proceeds under the aegis of the Russian Geographical Society, while Itar-Tass is among its information partners. Learn more on itar-tass.com
