BRUSSELS (AA) - January 9, 2013 - "Bread&Blanket for Syria," an international humanitarian aid campaign for civil war-stricken Syrians received Wednesday the support of Muslims in Europe.
In a press conference in Brussels, European Muslim Initiative for Social Cohesion, or EMISCO, called for contributions to the aid campaign.
"The European Union should not see Syria as a distant country. We are making a call to the EU to stand by the Syrian people in extending humanitarian aid. Because Europe is responsible in the future of all people living in its immediate neighborhood," Veysel Filiz, EMISCO spokesperson, told a press conference at the European Parliament.
The "Bread&Blanket for Syria" campaign was launched last December in Turkey by a group of Turkish civil society organizations and it quickly received nation-wide support.
The campaign has received the support of charity organizations from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Malaysia, Pakistan, Britain, Macedonia, Kuwait, Morocco, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Jordan, Egypt, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Bahrain, Algeria and Belgium.
