Situated at an altitude of 2,200 m above the sea level, the village of Gyryz is one of the most picturesque places in Guba district. This remote mountain village is located at the foot of Agh mountain on the shore of Gudyalchay river. The village is surrounded by several springs, waterfall and a cave. Gyryz is one of the villages which has the most annual snow.
AZERTAC presents the photographs taken by traveler Huseyn Mammadov.
The population of the village is a separate ethnographic group with its only language which no one else in the world speaks. It is a small ethnic group living in the northern zone of Azerbaijan, in the villages of Guba and Khachmaz regions. They speak in gyryz language belonging to Nakh-Dagestan language family, Lezgin language group. There are only 35 home in the Gyryz village. There is a large ancient cemetery in Gyryz, which proves that the village’s history is very old. Not far from Gyryz is located one more distinctive mountainous village Khinalig.
