BRICS members call upon all countries to implement Paris climate agreement

MOSCOW, June 20. /TASS/. BRICS members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - TASS) have urged all countries to implement the Paris climate agreement under the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported today following the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting held on June 18 - June 19 in Beijing. "The Ministers welcome the entry into force of the Paris Agreement on climate change on 4 November 2016 and urge all countries to implement the Paris Agreement under the principles of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change including the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities," the ministry noted. "They further call upon developed countries to fulfill their commitment to provide necessary financing, technology transfer and capacity building support to developing countries." The Paris Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015, in the French capital by 195 participants, that agreed to keep the average growth in global temperatures below 2°C by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels. Scientists believe that a more significant growth in global temperatures caused by carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels may lead to irreversible consequences for the planet’s ecology. On June 1, US President Donald Trump announced he was withdrawing the US from the Paris climate accord. Read more
