Malaysia Updates NDC To Reduce Intensity Of Unconditional GHG Emissions By 45 Pct

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has updated the targets in its climate change action plan by submitting Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to reduce the intensity of unconditional greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45 per cent based on gross domestic product by 2030. Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said in 2015, Malaysia had submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) with the intention of reducing the intensity of GHG emissions by 45 per cent by 2030, of which 35 per cent was implemented unconditionally while the remaining 10 per cent was conditional. “The unconditional NDC target has been raised from 35 per cent to 45 per cent, a 10 per cent increase from the INDC target in 2015,” he said, adding that the Malaysian NDC update target was approved by the Cabinet on July 30. He said the implementation of the INDC submitted in 2015, was subject to the financial allocation, technology transfer and capacity building from developed countries. Speaking virtually at the Climate Change e-Colloquium 2021 and the launch of Malaysia’s Third Biennial Update Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Tuesday, Tuan Ibrahim said the NDC update also took into account the scope of seven types of greenhouse gases compared to only three types previously. “Targets that place elements of environmental integrity will attract the attention of developed countries to help developing countries with a progressive image in addressing the climate change agenda,” he said. -- BERNAMA
