Cambodia urged to consult ASEAN on nuclear power project

BANGKOK, October 10 (TNA) - Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has called on neighbouring Cambodia to consult with other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on its reported plan to develop a nuclear power project. General Prayuth told reporters Tuesday, after a discussion in Bangkok on the Thai military's preparations toward the establishment of the ASEAN Community by 2015, that the reported Cambodian nuclear power project has pros and cons, citing such the project in other countries worldwide with its impacts as a good example. General Prayuth insisted that Phnom Penh needs to talk with other ASEAN member states before proceeding with the project, reportedly set to be implemented in Koh Kong, Cambodia's southwesternmost province, as the ASEAN member countries are becoming a single community over the next couple of years. The Thai army commander-in-chief said, however, that he believed the forming of the AC should boost Thai-Cambodian relations, covering the situation along the common border. According to the Thai army chief, issues raised at the close-door discussion also included violence in the Thai far South and other domestic matters. (TNA)
