S. Korea to send gov't, biz delegation to UAE

SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Yonhap) -- A large government and business delegation will visit
the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to hold talks on expanding renewable energy sector
cooperation, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said Friday.

The delegation led by Vice Knowledge Economy Minister Kim Young-hak will be in
the Middle Eastern country from Saturday through Wednesday to discuss potential
business tie-ups in solar energy, wind power, and joint research and development
in clean energy, said the ministry.
Business leaders from 27 companies such as Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Samsung
Electronics Co., and Doosan Heavy Industry & Construction Co. are also expected
to explore the feasibility of South Korean companies taking part in the Masdar
City project. They are also expected to sign preliminary deals to expand
cooperation in the shipbuilding and the semiconductor sectors.
The US$22 billion project calls for building a new "carbon neutral, zero waste"
city with 40,000 inhabitants and 1,500 companies and laboratories.
The ministry in charge of the country's industrial and energy policies, in
addition, said delegates will take part in the World Future Energy Summit and the
third session of the Preparatory Commission for the International Renewable
Energy Agency.
The visit comes after Seoul and Abu Dhabi signed a $20 billion deal late last
year to build four South Korean APR-1400 nuclear reactors for the oil-rich
country by 2020.
South Korea said it wants to establish a win-win partnership with the Middle
Eastern country and help transform the UAE into a nuclear hub for the region.
