Kia's global market share reaches 2.6 pct


SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's second-largest
automaker, expanded its global reach last year by grabbing 2.6 percent of the
world market, industry data showed Sunday.
Kia sold a total of 1.65 million vehicles worldwide, boosting its market share up
from 2.1 percent in 2008 and 1.9 percent in 2007, according to data it released
to investors.
Total global demand for autos in 2009 was estimated at 64.03 million units,
according to U.S. market surveyor J.D. Power and Associates.
Kia's home turf continued to be its largest market. It sold 412,752 units in
South Korea, followed by North America with 346,181 units and Europe with 331,733
units, the data showed. The automaker sold 241,386 cars in China last year.
Hyundai Motor Co., its larger affiliate under Hyundai Motor Group, was estimated
to have sold 3.11 million vehicles.
The combined market share of the two companies was estimated to be near 8 percent
for 2009, with Hyundai recording an average market share of 5.2 percent in the
first three quarters of the year.
