S. Korea-UAE partnership on nuclear power takes effect

SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Yonhap) -- The signed South Korea-United Arab Emirates (UAE)
partnership agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear power took effect earlier
this month, government officials here said Sunday.
In June 2009, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a deal to
cooperate in the field of nuclear energy.
The prime ministers of the two countries agreed then to further elevate bilateral
relations, particularly ahead of 2010, which marks the 30th anniversary of the
establishment of their diplomatic ties, according to officials at the Ministry of
Education, Science and Technology.
South Korea was the fifth country after the U.S., Britain, France and Japan to
sign such an agreement with the UAE.
Seoul and Abu Dhabi signed a separate $20 billion deal in December last year for
a South Korean consortium to build four APR-1400 nuclear reactors in the oil-rich
country by 2020.
The officials said South Korea aims to establish a "win-win" partnership with the
Middle Eastern country and help transform the UAE into a nuclear energy hub for
the region.
