SEOUL, Feb. 1 (Yonhap) -- The government announced Monday plans to build a
nationwide network of bicycle paths by 2019, as part of a wider plan to lower
carbon emissions.

The bicycle network will span about 3,100 kilometers, a length more than seven
times the Seoul-Busan expressway, the Ministry of Public Administration and
Security said in a statement.
The paths will be built alongside the country's coastlines and the Demilitarized
Zone that bisects the two Koreas and run through major urban centers across the
country, the ministry said.
In the first phase, the government will this year construct a 178
kilometer-section of the route at a cost of 100 billion won (US$86 million), the
ministry said.
"The construction of a national bike route will serve as a foothold for realizing
low-carbon green growth and leaping into an age of green transportation," the
statement said.
Pledging to promote green growth, President Lee Myung-bak has strongly advocated
increased use of bicycles for transportation.
