Toyota faces first lawsuit in S. Korea

SEOUL, Feb. 17 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean Prius owner has filed a lawsuit against
Toyota Motor Corp., demanding compensation of 138 million won (US$120,000) from
the Japanese company for a problem in the car's braking system, a Seoul law firm
said Wednesday.
It is the first lawsuit against Toyota in South Korea in relation to defects in
the Japanese vehicles, amid an avalanche of personal injury and damages lawsuits
filed after Toyota began recalling several of its models.
The Prius hybrid owner, identified only by his surname Kim, filed the suit
against Toyota, its Korean unit and a domestic dealer with the Seoul Central
District Court. Kim, who bought the Prius last September, said he had serious
problem with the car's braking system and recently stopped driving the car after
becoming aware of the defect.
Toyota began to recall all of the 510 Prius hybrid vehicles sold in South Korea
on last Tuesday due to the braking problem.
