ETIHAD AIRWAYS ON TRACK TO ACHIEVE 7 MLN PASSENGER VOLUME

SANTHIA THEVI PANJANADAN

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- United Arab Emirates' Etihad Airways is on
track to achieve its seven million passenger volume target for its financial
year ending March 2010. It would be a 15 per cent growth from 2009.

Malaysia Country Manager Adam Phillips said as of December 2009, the airline
recorded a passenger volume of about six million and was confident of
achieving the remaining volume amid the competitive market.

It recorded a passenger volume of six million in 2008 with a
fleet of 42 aircrafts.

"We are positive in achieving the target with increased routes and network.
The airline has increased its routes from 55 destinations to 58 destinations."

The airline which recently launched its route to Nagoya will be also
launching the Tokyo route next month, he told Bernama after hosting a media
appreciation lunch Tuesday.

The first six months of 2009 saw the number of passengers carried by Etihad
Airways increase by eight per cent to 3.01 million passengers, compared to 2.78
million during the same period in 2008.

Currently, the airline has a 70 per cent passenger load capacity for the
Kuala Lumpur route, he added.

Phillips also said international sports sponsorship played a central role in
Etihad’s global marketing strategy, as it sought to develop its profile in
markets across the world.

Etihad is focusing on strenghtening its position and brand in
Malaysia through awareness programmes as part of its strategy this year.

"The aviation industry is on a recovering period and Asia is one of our
strongest markets," Phillips said.

"So, we will be concentrating on building our presence in Malaysia
for 2010 given the huge appetite amongst our customers to travel beyond
Malaysia.

"We have started by sponsoring the Malaysia's first corporate indoor golf
league," he added.

The airline achieved US$3 billion in revenue for the financial
year ended March 2009, which is an increase of 20 per cent from the previous
year.

The Abu Dhabi-based airline currently operates seven weekly flights to the
Malaysian capital.

With its newly launched route to Nagoya and the upcoming Tokyo route, Etihad
offers flights to 60 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, North America,
Africa, Asia and Australia.
