FISHERY MINISTRY PRIORITIZING HUMAN RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT

Padang, Indonesia, March 4 (ANTARA) - Marine and Fishery Affairs Minister Fadel Muhammad said here on Thursday that his ministry gave priority to human resources development.

Therefore, the minister said, he always reminded district heads and mayors whenever he visited regions, to accept graduates of fishery schools and academies.

Minister Fadel was on a two-day working visit to West Sumatra's Padangpariaman, Padang, and Pesisir Selatan. His agenda included a visit to Fishery Business High School (SUPM) in Padangpariaman.

"The Marine and Fishery Affairs Ministry applies four grand strategy and human resources development is on the top. Human resources must be integrated from the central to regional governments," the minister said.

The ministry has eight fishery high schools, three fishery academies, and one fishery institute in Jakarta, according to him.

Human resources in the fishery sector needed to be improved from time to time for the benefit of the nation, he said.

Indonesia is an archipelago with more than 17 000 islands and a coastline of about 81 000 km. The area that can potentially be used for aquaculture development is of 26 606 000 ha. Aquaculture plays an important role in reducing unemployment.***
