Diab bin Zayed: Shuweihat S3 to increase electricity production and raise foreign investments to Dh65 billion
Abu Dhabi, Mar 10, 2010 (WAM)- HH Sheikh Diab Bin Zayed Al Nahyan chairman of Abu Dhabi Water '&' Electricity Authority (ADWEA) announced yesterday the pre-qualification of fourteen companies and international coalitions to participate in the tender for Shuweihat (S3) project. His Highness said that the qualified companies are among the major international companies operating in the production of energy and water and are from various countries. Several of these companies have been awarded earlier projects carried out by the Independent Water '&' Power Producers Program (IWPP) to privatise the water and electricity sector.
Sheikh Diab added that the Shuweihat (S3) Project is the ninth of this program and is considered unique for its production of electricity only, having a production capacity of 1,600 MW. Shuweihat S3 project will increase production capacity to more than 13 thousand megawatts electricity and foreign investments generated from the privatisation program to more than AED65 Billion.
Sheikh Diab considers such high attraction by major international companies to participate in this project a clear demonstration to the success made by ADWEA through its unique role in privatisation of the sector, its significance in the national economy in terms of attracting foreign investments, in addition to introducing advanced technology and global expertise and providing job opportunities for UAE nationals.
He said that this clearly reflects the strength of the Economy of Abu Dhabi Emirate and the transparency in the privatisation program adopted; participations in the project will follow the same model adopted in previous projects where the foreign partner's share will be 40% while ADWEA maintains its 60% share. Participation of global, regional and local banks to finance this project is highly expected.
ADWEA has been implementing a successful privatisation program since its inception in 1998. Since then, nine projects have been implemented reaching a production of 823 Million Imperial Gallons of water daily and 13,427 megawatts, and thus turning the Emirate of Abu Dhabi to be the only self-sufficient city in the Middle East, facing no lack of energy or water, furthermore, providing certain production capacities to the Northern Emirates in the United Arab Emirates.
Some of the shortlisted companies are: General Electric International Operation Company (USA), International Power (UK), Korea Electric Power Company "KEPCO" (Korea), Marubeni Corporation (Japan), Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), Mitsui '&' Company Limited (Japan), PowerTek Berhad (Malaysia), Sembcorp Industries Limited (Singapore), Swiss Energy Middle East (France), Sumitomo Corporation (Japan), and Tokyo Electric Power Company ‘TEPCO" (Japan).
