ASMINDO TARGETS 15 PCT HIKE IN FURNITURE EXPORTS

Jakarta, March 11 (ANTARA) - The Association of Indonesian Furniture and Handicraft Industries (Asmindo) is targeting an increase of 15 percent in exports of furnitures this year.

"Asmindo wishes the value of Indonesia's furniture exports in 2010 will increase by 15 percent from last year or minimally equal that of 2008 that reached US$2.65 billion," Asmindo's general chairman Ambar Tjahyono said after opening the International Furniture and Craft Fair Indonesia (IFFINA) at Kemayoran here on Thursday.

Ambar said the drop in the furniture exports in 2009 was not as had been expected before at 40 percent and therefore he believed the 2010's target would be too difficult to achieve.

"We have made an agreement that the ministries of trade and industry would help and support efforts to open new export markets," he said.

He said the holding of exhibitions so far had helped achieved the export targets.

He said a total of transactions made in last year's exhibition reached US$170 million. This year it is expected it would generate up to US250 million.

"Indonesia's furniture industry needs twice exhibitions a year to maximize mobilization of buyers," he said.

Asmindo plans to hold the second IFFINA in October this year. It also plans to participate in exhibitions in Shanghai, China, in June 2010.
