Bomb at Customs Department causes minor damage

BANGKOK, March 27 (TNA) -- An explosion at the Customs Department adjacent to Bangkok's Klongtoey Port before dawn Saturday caused minor damage to the building but no casualties were reported, police said.

Police said an unidentified man threw a K-75 grenade at the Customs Department and the explosion had caused a small crater while windows, ceilings and a van parked in front of the 120-year-old building were damaged.

No casualties were reported in the incident.

Police said they found fragments of the grenade with serial numbers and manufacturers information removed, scraped off. A light blue glove was found near the scene and is part of the police investigation.

Members of the public cannot possess a K-75 grenade, police said.

The Saturday explosion took place as Red Shirt anti-government protesters of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) are protesting in Bangkok demanding Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolving the House and calling a general election.

Saturday marks two weeks for the demonstration and key UDD leaders have warned earlier that more violence will occur if Parliament is not dissolved.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol. Lt-Gen. Santhan Chayanont said earlier that the incidents that happened in Bangkok and adjacent provinces were believed to have been carried out by the same group as the serial numbers and manufacturing data on the grenades and other explosives found at the scenes of the incidents were scratched out.

He said that similar incidents are likely to happen in the future.

In related developments M79, M203 grenades were found close to Pattawikorn Market, believed to readied for attack but they were abandoned to aviod checkpoint search nearby. (TNA)
